Note: the following are research reports and references for work delineating the health effects of overexposure to elevated electromagnetic fields. Specific reference to sleep disorders induced by EMF appear in italics.

The Work of Dr. Robert O. Becker, MD ... to date, his work is foundary, summary and pivotal to the entry of bio-energetics (vs. bio-chemistry) as the basis for our medical technology and toxicology. Dr. Becker is a two-time Nobel Prize Nominee, orthopedic surgeon, author of the British Government policy against cell-phone sales and use by minors and a mastermind scientist/research whose work summaries two centuries of research into electrical control, phenomenon and effects in human physiology. If I could start again in the search for competent understanding, I would save untold hours starting here. He is the grandfather of modern bio-energetic medicine.

"Cross Currents" (1995) ISBN 0-87477-609-0 ....the second of his books (see Body Electric listed below). The book covers masterfully subjects and research findings, along with analysis of how we really work too numerous to receive justice here. It moves through our evolution, cellular physiology, the function of our nerve system and the key controlling mechanism that small electrical currents and fields play in the regulation of our bodies. It then analyses the scientific basis for "alternative" and historic healing modalities (homeopathy, shamanics, acupuncture, Qi Gong) in a fair and startling manner. His work explaining the pollution of our living environment with elevated EMF from myriad sources (including weapons development) and its correlation to disease is stunning. It concludes with recommendations and solutions, which we have now, a decade later, moved deeper into and beyond as many of us are living with exactly the hypersensitization and anomalies he describes. His legacy of scientific expertise and analytical capabilities is extraordinary considering the current prolifery of defensive M.D.s bent on more pharmaceutical remedies. This is the book where I recommend people start. Though a brilliant scientist and not bashful about technical detail, Dr. Becker possesses the rare capacity to deliver a manuscript completely accessible and beneficial to the ordinary person.

"The Body Electric" (1985)- The predecessor to Cross Currents, apparently focusing on what is known about EMF functions in the regulation of our body systems. (Not yet reviewed by Smart Shelter).

World Health Organization....(summer 2005) has currently convened an international research authority panel to officially designate and describe hypersensitive reaction to Electro-Magnetic Fields as a professionally recognized disease.

EPA Draft Report, March 1990...direct and indirect evidence suggests that AC electric and magnetic fields increase the risk of certain cancers...and some studies suggest that fields suppress the production of sleep-inducing Melatonin.

Prescription for a Healthy House (ISBN 0-86571-434-7) by Dr. Erica Elliott,MD and Paula Baker, AIA (Santa Fe) (second edition) ("bible for contemporary nontoxic building for the professional design,building and medical community")...Studies in Europe have indicated that exposure to varying levels of electric fields can contribute to nervous disorders such as insomnia, depression, and anxiety...magnetic fields...are now suspected of promoting cancer, especially leukemia, lymphoma, and thyroid and brain cancers.

Electromagnetic Fields and Life by A.S. Presman from Department of Biophysics, Moscow describes in detail many experiments that have shown that electromagnetic fields may cause a host of health problems, including blood disorders, hypertension, heart attacks, headaches, sexual dysfunction, drowsiness and nervous exhaustion.

Studies at the Crimean Medical Institute demonstrated that electric and magnetic fields stimulated the growth of 13 different strains of bacteria...and increased the resistance to antibiotics. Another study in Russia showed that exposure to microwave radiation...gradually reduced norepinephrine and dopamine levels (crucial to normal sleep patterns) which indicates exhaustion of the adrenal cortex and the autonomic nervous system.

A University of Colorado Study on childhood cancer (confirmed in Sweden), a more than double rate of cancer (leukemia, lymph node cancer, and nervous system tumors) for children living close to powerlines...later found true for adults. VDT's - Computer screens...excessive exposure caused...a tingling sensation, sleep disorder, skin rashes, irritability, anxiety, apathy, depression, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, allergies and diminished immune response.

Andrew Marion, a biophysicist at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Syracuse, NY has shown in studies that...field strengths...cause physiological effects such as changes in heart rate and blood chemistry...

Swedish standard for exposure from VDTs - 2 milliGauss at 11.8 " from screen. This standard, which has led the computer/television industry manufacturing standard in Europe is now the basis for conformity and advertising for many American models today largely due to public awareness and demands.

The Sick House Survival Guide- Simple Steps to Healtier Homes

 After moving into a newly remodeled home, the auther went from being a normal, healthy woman to one who was so sick she was barely functional. Knowing nothing about environmental illness, this book tells of her search for answers and over-coming her illness. After working her way through the toxic chemicals in the home and having some improvement in her health, she finally finds that electro-magnetic fields are the cause of many remaining symptoms. She then explains, through a series of observations and journal keeping, how you can find and avoid the trouble spots in your own home.

 Her story is probably a familiar one to most E.I.s and although she has some good advice, she also unfortunately, has some serious errors. As an example, without the use of meters to measure the fields, she suggests using an earpiece to avoid the high magnetic fields from cell phones. We know, by use of the meters, that those earpieces are of no use at all and are, in fact, worse than just the phone by itself. She also trys to 'fix' and live with toxic chemicals and fields that would be impossile for many E.I.'s.

This is an interesting story and may be a worthwhile book for those just becoming familiar with environmental illness, but take her advice with caution! A more informed authority and the use of meters will erase the time-consuming 'guessing game' she plays with fields and could save you from many costly mistakes.

What was intelligible is that it also appears to be the site for the Council on Wireless Technology Impacts...self-described as "We are citizens and professionals concerned about safe uses of Electromagnetic Radiation."....dealing with cellphones, towers, antennas, health and legislation. Would probably be good if we could read it. Probably they're not on macintosh.

www.microwavenews.com- "a report on non-ionizing radiation". This site posits several services for those concerned or interested in EMF issues. The first is a news service including commentaries regarding international progress on research and legislation. Archives (web posted) seem dated to 2004 only. Past issues from 1995-2003 are posted with contents and editorials only. Free downloading of 9 free issues is accessible. Older back issues available on order from 1981. Content on preliminary review appears quite professional and competent. It also offers a twice monthly paid briefing service for updates. Also available are a number of field meters in price ranges from $180 to $2500. We're still looking for the magnetic/electric field meter below $200 for easy use. An extended listing of web sites indexes governmental, research, international, private advocate and industry sites. A free email update service is offered. Very comprehensive and professional, now apparently over 20 years old.

emr policy institute www.emrpolicy.org- This site offers news, international and national information on EMR (electromagnetic radiation) regulation, scientific research, litigation, public policy links to other sites, books and videos and mitigation. It begins with a good introduction to EMF, discussions of radio and microwave emissions, human exposures, effects to wildlife and the environment and evaluation of the degree of competent safety afforded by current standards and regulations. It's indexing of web links is impressive, including a lot on cell phones and several digests/ tracking sites (including the ones industry maintains). For a researcher wanting a beginning and comprehensive bibliography, this would be a good start. Their regulatory and litigative coverage tracks the work of San Francisco movements and those on Look Out Mountain signal tower farm posing major problems, especially with the advent of cellphones and HDTV...both utilizing digital (rather than analog) signals...seen by researchers such as Dr. Robert O. Becker as significantly increasing harmful effects.

www.neilcherry.com- Dr Neil Cherry (New Zealand/ now deceased)- a pioneering researcher/ professor in many environmental issues in New Zealand beginning in the 1970's, recipient of awards and educating/enforcer for the stringent regulatory system that has protected New Zealand's environment, which requires application and permission for any industrial concern to release contaminants into the environment...including electromagnetic fields. His work protecting a preschool from cellphone tower installation next door began a research theme in his profession which lasted the rest of his life. International Institute for Bau-Biologie and Ecology (IBE)-www.bau-biologieusa.com- Strangely missing from references in all the other sites is the actual origin of the EMF information that lead to my personal diagnosis, training and remediation....which is the 60 year old Bau-Biologie (meaning Healthy Home) Movement in Germany...now offering training programs internationally and in this country headed up by the entity in Clearwater, Florida which is the home of this web site. Among many aspects of environmental health regarding the built environment...electromagnetic radiation figures large. Courses and products are available from this site. A much needed field of competently trained analysists is begun here with inspectors available in Kanab, Utah and Boulder, Colorado. Many products are available on the site including several EMF meters ... though none have been tested or meet the criterion of the Smart Shelter Network (closest is the ME 3030B Personal EMF Meter at $149...but apparently necessitating a grounding wire and rod...unless you're escorting a very large iron dog whose leash ends in a mini plug).

Doctors/ Consultants/ Practitioners

Dr. Robert O. Becker, MD- a prolific writer and researcher in the field on electromagnetic fields, electromedicine, etc. Twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, consultant to the British Government on teenage cellphone sales bans, director of various institutions in New York and Louisiana, an orthopedic surgeon, apparently lives in upstate New York, may be retired. Publications include books: Cross Currents, The Body Electric, Mechanisms of Growth Control, Electromagnetism and Life, The Health Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation. He was a primary research in early studies (1970's) with the U.S. Navy which first uncovered the hazards and responses of EMF and subsequently has witnessed the military and industry's cover up of dangers in powerlines, cellphones, etc. He is an incisive intellect, impressively informed across many field lines and an apparently avid fighter in adversity and discounting response. His works reviewed by Smart Shelter to date are stunning and very possibly the baseline publications of informed and intelligent information on EMF from an MD showing stunning capacity to rise above conventional corporate pharmaceutical medicine.

Dr. William Rae, MD- Environmental Health Center, Dallas, Texas (founder) a surgeon who self diagnosed over years a hypersensitivity to electronic surgery equipment in the surgery rooms. He established a clinic which apparently specializes in testing patients for EMF reactions capable of isolating very specific reactions to narrow frequency ranges with test results gathered in blind analysis as "objective measures of the activity of the autonomic nervous system". These quotes are from Dr. Becker's book Cross Currents, specifying that Dr. Rae's facility is the best equipped in the country (indicating that there are others). Ruth Davis contacted the center in the summer of 2005 seeking medical diagnosis and certification and received indication that she would have to travel to Dallas and spend about $2000 in testing. Whether analysis or certification are possible with detailed and submitted case studies and deposition, removing the necessity of travel and testing (along with expense) are unknown. Dr. Becker further comments that the responses tested are varied, all indicate a rapid escalation of the problem culturally and no known remedy except removal to locales free (or relatively free) of fields. Implication is similar to Smart Shelter's conclusion with EMF and MCS hypersensitivities that they are abrupt (thresholding) phenomenon and apparently irreversable...indicating the only reasonable protection is prevention prior to threshold.

Dr. Sam Jahani, DO (164 W 3rd St, Delta, Co 970-874-9977)- Reviewed and certified Ruth Matthews Davis as disabled due to EMF Hypersensitization...summer 2006. Dr. Jahani on later interview indicated he was a medical school classmate of Dr. Rae listed above, but had no idea of his transition from surgeon to EMF specialist. Dr. Jahani apparently had numberous patients in the Dallas area complaining of EMF symptoms, some of whom he knew well enough not to discount and consequently came to validate EMF Hypersensitation as legitimate all on his own. He has received Smart Shelter treatises on EMF, proposals for the Micro Habitat and Land Steward Programs as perscriptive to those sensitized. He correctly concluded in Ruth's case that there is no appropriate medical treatment (forgoing the typical chemical mind numbing prolific with pharmaceutical based MDs) and has voiced preliminary interest in receiving further training in EMF which has been offered without cost by Smart Shelter. He has indicated he will see and accept others based on EMF issues. In his letter to authorities regarding Ruth;s case he indicated that he has seen and treated humdreds of such cases.

Smart Shelter Reviews

The Melatonin Miracle (Walter Pierpaoli, M.D., Phd and William Regelson, M.D with Carol Colman) ISBN 0-684-81335. This review is included here as much as an exemplary warning about the pathetic state of American medical science today as it is for any particular recommendation. The title flaunts melatonin as a remedy for aging, disease and sexual lack. Off to a piss poor start out the door. Obviously slanted toward a less than adequately endowed marketing demography prone to believe in yet another get fixed quick miracle from the AMA. The book itself and its romance with synthetically manufactured melatonin (the authors' links to the pharmaceutical industry would bear investigation here) we'll leave to the bored. The book does, however, attempt addressing the rapidly (worldwide) coming to awareness of the effects of EMF and its relationship to an exactly parallel electrification (with AC power) of our lifestyles to cancer, sleep disorder, arthritic irritation, immune suppression, etc. Its conclusion is mildly scoffing. Its example of the pathetic lack of scientific capabilities of the authors is atrocious. The book does credence a study by pathologists at the University of Toronto Sunnybrook Health Science Center citing the timeline correlation between breast cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, etc and the electrification of modern society. (As in other less than inspired refutations ...it dwells on the cancer scare completely ignoring sleep disorders, nerve damage, immune suppression, balance loss, ADD, chronic fatigue and all the other "minors" associated with EMF inundation.) It further states (pg 125) ..."some highly respected scientists contend that the spread of electric power is the main reason cancer rates are on the rise." Melatonin is (and the book substantiates) both a cancer-inhibiting hormone and subject to decreased production by our endocrine system with exposure to EMF...especially on evening exposure (nighttime tv) when melatonin secretion peaks. This is where the science goes south and the guacamole deepens. The rest of the EMF treatment pursues the (ironically similar) argument patterns of both the pharmaceutical industry and the electrical power industry in attempting to undermine and discount these facts. First it states that we have become so AC power dependent that freeing ourselves from them is impossible. (Smart Shelter E.I. Land Stewards live in Micro-Habitats with exactly zero AC EMF on a year in and year out basis...we also don't pay power bills to the largest global warming pollution industry in the world.) Next it suggests that remediating powerline EMF to protect our children is too expensive (I save about $600 per year doing exactly that). It then launches into direct refutation of EMF effects siting, of course, myriad other resources (in an era when congressional lobby from the power industry increasingly short circuits funding for independent scientific study while industry itself replaces the missing science with its own, along with its revolving door replacement of key officials in our regulatory agencies.) The singularly most glaring shortfall of the knowledge level which produced this work is their citing in at least two incidences the problematical basis of AC EMF's effects noting the earths powerful magnetic field (which is true ... 500 milliguass) and also the myriad occurrence of magnetite crystals in our bodies. The EMF fields produced by both the planet and the magnetite crystals are DC. The distinction between AC and DC fields is covered in the average sophomore level college physics curriculum. If our MD's were adequately trained in the basis of all science (physics) we might find an increased proficiency in avoiding such glaring failures of scientific reason, such as this, along with the integration of quantum mechanics into medical technology (which is the last remaining field to fail its integration) with the accompanying quantum leap in health sciences, which would be capable of explaining the bio-energetic driving force of all bio-chemical phenomenon... a causality made by the Chinese 6,000 years ago (without quantum physics) and functional in the widespread successful treatment of EMF hypersensitivity. The study dangerously concludes that your computer, refrigerator, hair dryer and electric blanket are all just fine and those seeking to distance, eliminate or avoid them are "frantic". (If you're noting problems in association with these devices consult other EMF sensitive persons and get the hell away from them.) This conclusion is overtly disastrous. The conclusion of the Swedish computer screen manufacturing community 20 years ago that these things were causing health effects (look at the pallor of any computer geek) resulting in the 2 milligaus Swedish standard for manufacture, which has now become a conformational necessity in America due to consumer pressure, reasons (rightly) otherwise is a refreshing departure basically flying conclusions like these into the compartment of certified bunk. Oh, by the way, the authors conclude that just to be safe... take melatonin. Go figure. It is estimated that up to 80% of the newspaper/ magazine articles in print (and now, obviously the books) originate in the marketing departments of corporate manufacturers who rightly reason that their advertising and propaganda are more effective disguised as news and "miracle" book rubbish than as paid advertising they have taught us to repel. We include this review not as informational science but as a dissected warning about what you'll find lurking out there that good science and your intuition will certainly expel.
